Do I Need a Website, a Registered Business or a Bank Account to Start Selling?

Quick answer: No. To start selling on Sellzw you need only a phone with internet, an email address and something to sell. Sellzw gives you a free store link instead of a website, and you can be paid to EcoCash instead of a bank account. You don't need a registered business, but you must verify with your National ID once you've earned $100.

Key points

  • Website: not needed. Your store link (sellzw.com/your-name) is your website.
  • Bank account: not needed. You can withdraw to EcoCash.
  • Registered business: not needed to start. Individuals can sell.
  • National ID: needed once you've earned $100, to verify before withdrawing.

Do I need a website to sell online in Zimbabwe?

No. When you sign up, Sellzw gives you a free store with its own link, and that link works like a website. It looks like this:

sellzw.com/your-store-name

Your store shows your name or logo, a short bio, your store colour, and a page for every product with a Buy button. There's no hosting to pay for, no domain to renew and no developer to hire.

You share the link wherever your customers already are:

  • your WhatsApp status and groups
  • your Facebook page or Instagram bio
  • your TikTok profile
  • in a message to a customer who asks "how do I buy?"

Building your own website with a working EcoCash checkout and automatic file delivery would cost hundreds of dollars and weeks of work. Sellzw gives you that on day one, free.

Do I need a bank account to get paid?

No. You can receive all your earnings through EcoCash. In Settings → Payout Settings, choose one of two payout methods:

Payout method What you need
EcoCash Your EcoCash number and the name it's registered under
Bank transfer A Zimbabwean bank account (bank name, account holder, account number)

Every sale goes into your Sellzw wallet. Seven days after each sale the money becomes available, and you can withdraw from $5 upwards. For your security, changing your payout details asks for your password again.

Do my buyers need a bank account or card?

No. Buyers pay in USD with EcoCash, InnBucks or O'mari, all from their phone. Buyers who prefer cards can use Zimswitch or Visa/Mastercard. Most Zimbabwean buyers don't have to change anything about how they already pay.

Do I need a registered business or company?

No. You can sign up and sell on Sellzw as an individual, with no company registration. Plenty of sellers are students, teachers, employees with a side hustle, or creators starting out.

Two things to know as you grow:

  1. Taxes are your responsibility. Sellzw's Seller Agreement says each seller handles their own tax obligations. Once your sales become a real income, speak to an accountant or ZIMRA about what applies to you.
  2. Registering later is fine. Many people start as individuals, prove there's demand, and register a business once it makes sense.

What do I actually need to start selling?

Here's the complete list:

You need Why
A phone or computer with internet To set up your store and share your link
An email address To sign up and receive sale notifications
Something to sell An ebook, template, course, ticket, beat and so on
An EcoCash number or a Zimbabwean bank account To withdraw your earnings
Your National ID (once you've earned $100) To verify your identity before withdrawing

That's it. There's no sign-up fee and no monthly fee on the Free plan. Sellzw takes a 10% fee only when you make a sale.

Why do I need to verify my identity?

Verification keeps scammers off Sellzw and protects your money. Once your total earnings reach $100, you'll need to verify before you can withdraw.

It takes a few minutes, in Settings → Account Verification:

  1. Enter your full legal name and National ID number exactly as they appear on your ID.
  2. Upload a clear photo of yourself holding your ID, with your face and the ID details readable.
  3. Wait 24–48 hours for the review. You'll get an email when it's done.

Tip: verify early, before you reach $100, so nothing slows down your first big withdrawal.

Can I start selling with no money at all?

Yes. The Free plan costs nothing forever, and you can create your first product with tools you already have. Write an ebook in Google Docs or Word and save it as a PDF, or record lessons on your phone and upload them to YouTube as unlisted videos for a course. You only pay the 10% fee after a customer pays you.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sell on Sellzw using only my phone?

Yes. You can sign up, add products, share your store link and withdraw your earnings from a phone. You don't need a laptop, although one makes it easier to create things like ebooks and courses.

Do I need a registered company to sell on Sellzw?

No. Individuals can sign up and sell without registering a business. You are responsible for your own taxes, so speak to an accountant or ZIMRA as your income grows.

Can I get paid without a bank account?

Yes. Choose EcoCash as your payout method and your withdrawals go straight to your EcoCash number. Bank transfer to a Zimbabwean bank is optional.

Why does Sellzw ask for my National ID?

Once you've earned $100 in total, you must verify your identity before you can withdraw. You enter your ID details and upload a photo of yourself holding your ID, and the review takes 24 to 48 hours. This keeps fraudsters off the platform and protects your money.
